Su Dongpo was one of the "Three Literary Masters of the Su Family" and is honored among the "Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties," thus his poetry and prose are undoubtedly exceptional. Following the principle that excellence in learning leads to public service, he naturally entered politics, dedicating himself to practical governance for the people. By nature, he was open-minded and resilient—unfazed by honor or disgrace, at peace wherever he found himself—and was also a celebrated gourmet.
Serving twice in Hangzhou was perhaps the happiest chapter of Su Dongpo’s life. He endured three major exiles in his lifetime, which he once summarized in his own verse: “If you ask what I have achieved in my life—Huangzhou, Huizhou, and Danzhou.” This book paints a portrait of Su Dongpo across these four places: how he arrived, how he lived in each location, the paths he often walked, the people he befriended, his literary creations, his family life, how he connected with ordinary people, his administrative accomplishments, and his lasting impact on local culture. The author strives to restore a flesh-and-blood Dongpo—a traveler at heart, a man troubled yet often transcendent, and a soul who carried the people in his heart and always sought to make a difference.
Qiu Yuanyuan, a native of Shouzhou, Anhui Province, is a teacher and a member of the Chinese Writers Association. Her published works include essay collections such as Floating Shadows, Drifting Catkins, A Garden of Talents: Portraits from the Grand View Garden, On the Edge of Culture, In the Next Life, Be a Sweet Osmanthus, and Living Next Door to Su Dongpo, as well as the novel Life Elsewhere.
